Design Students Construct Quilt for Historic House

Kennesaw, Ga. (March 25, 2013) – Students in Kennesaw Mountain High School’s Foundation of Interior Design class recently participated in a project to provide design ideas for the city of Kennesaw’s Community House, located at Cherokee St. and Big Shanty Rd. The house is part of Depot Park and was built in 1907. Students are presenting Design Boards of their ideas for use, theme, and interior furnishings for the house.

The students suggested a quilt for the wall constructed of Civil War reproduction fabrics. Teanna Grisham, KMHS Interior Design teacher, invited Robin Jones, owner of Cottontail Quilts to help educate the students on the history and construction of quilts. “It’s exciting to see high school students interested in the art of quilting”, says Jones. “We see a lot of young people wanting to learn how to sew as well as quilt

The idea was presented to the KMHS Interior Design Furnishings class. Students quickly volunteered to assist by constructing the quilt. Each of the 24 students made a block for the quilt and also helped with its completion. The students are using the quilt as a focal point in one of the four rooms they are decorating. The quilt will be permanently displayed in the house.

Kennesaw’s Mayor Mark Mathews and the Kennesaw City Council are hosting a reception to display the Kennesaw Mountain High Schools Interior Design student’s work for parents and the community on May 9 from 4:30-6:00 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. The students’ design as well as the quilt will be showcased.
